I started a new job this past week at a restaurant as a busser, where the pay would be $8 an hour + tips. For background, I worked as a host in another restaurant where the pay was also 8+ tips, but if the tips weren’t enough, you’d get bumped into minimum wage. So I had assumed it was like this in here, during my interview we didn’t really cover this. Today my paycheck came in and it was 2.60 an hour below minimum wage, which took me by surprise. I mentioned this to a coworker whose response and I quote, “you aren’t special, why should they pay you more”.? And this honestly bothered me, when I asked others it seem as if it’s normal that they get paid below minimum wage which I don’t understand. I would talk to management tomorrow and hopefully get an answer, but has this happened to anyone else and if so, how did you went about it? (In NJ minimum wage is 15.49)
